You can find many remodelling contractors trying to stir up business by offering a multitude of discounts to homeowners. However, that remodelling bargain can turn quickly become expensive if the work done is not good quality or even worse, the contractor disappears once the deposit has been cashed.
Do not get too excited over completing a remodelling, always do the necessary groundwork.
The tips I have will help you properly prepare yourself to ensure that your remodelling goes right.
1. Research before any jobs begins
Performing due diligence beforehand will reduce the chance of having bad quality work done to your home. This also includes contacting more than one contractor for the job. When you find a list of contractors, always ask to see previous work and how long ago the jobs was done. You will of course ask how much they charge, but do not skip any important questions; the questions you have to ask should entail on problems previous clients have had, if you can contact them, etc.
You have to also check to see whether they are properly licensed, but this should be done when you have selected your top choice for the job.
2. Documentation
You must document everything throughout the remodelling. This includes a proper contract that should have deadlines, goals, costs, etc. Make sure the products stated in the contract will be used, and that they are not cutting any corners.
3. Always bring your up any concerns you have
Do not keep anything to yourself when you find a problem. Always bring your concerns to the contractor you have hired. Get it resolved immediately, that way you can be sure that the work can be fixed without worrying about extra costs.
4. Escalating a problem
In the event that a problem you have brought up with your contractor has not been resolved, it is time to take it up a level. You will have to go for legal action. This can start off by the homeowner making a formal demand for mediation with the contractor, according to the terms of the agreement.
If you can resolve the issue there, then there is no lawsuit, however if the mediator cannot come to a decision, then a lawsuit would be the next step.
With anything in life, you have to do the proper work to get a good result and with remodelling, if you take the time to plan, you will be sure to have a great job done to your home.
